'Burgfoot Prints is the quarterly zine from 88.1 The 'Burg. This was a project that I started in my last winter with the station, but one that I had been wanting to get in motion for a while.
The idea was that anyone from the station could have their own page to express themself in any way they wanted. This is not just a collection of show ads, these are extensions of the shows. This is another way for the DJs to have their voices heard and leave their print on The 'Burg.
Throughout the process I was in charge of designing the exterior of the zine as well as the editor's note, credits, and activity page (shown below). In addition, I also had the responsibility of maintaining communication with all of the creators, collecting all of the pages (both digital and physical), and formatting them in the final inDesign file.
Another fun part of the process was the "zine nights." During these after hours sessions, I would turn the station's back office into an art studio with large tables, computers, printers, paint pens, paper, scissors, and any other supplies I could think of. Any zine creators could then stop by to collaborate with others, ask questions, or just hang out and create in a fun, social environment. These events ended up being a hit and resulted in significant bonding and team building in addition to stronger, more creative zine pages.
For the first issue I decided on a classic punk-rock zine look with real magazine and photograph collages and xerox machines. I feel that this worked very well in the black and white format of the zine.
This issue ended up being a hit, our stock running out almost immediately. This meant we got a sequel.
For issue two I wanted to do something that was visually very different, but still maintained the humorous tone of the first. After running some drafts and concepts by other staff I ended up creating a parody of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books with original illustrations and comics. This proved to be an even bigger hit than the first issue.
